Best time to visit

the peak travel season of Maldives is from November through April due to its finest weather with infinite light sunshine. However, during this time, the prices on everything from accommodation to activities skyrockets. For budget travelers, this season would be huge no. Budget travelers should plan the trip between the peak and off-season as, during this time, the weather will still be delightful, and there will be discounts in almost everything because there will be about 20percent fewer visitors compared to the Peak season. There will be a greater chance of rainfall during off-seasons, however, it’s not like it rains all day long. So, for budget travelers, the period from April to September will be the best time.

Things to Remember

The resort hotels are very safe for travelers as crime is relatively low in these hotels. However, minor crime occurs a lot like the theft of goods left unattended on the beach or in hotel rooms. When traveling in the Maldives, you should take extra care of your possessions, particularly in Male. You can use safe deposit boxes on island resorts. While traveling outside resort islands, be on extra guard as the country has high gang-related violence, including knife crime.

Local Travel

If you are planning to go outside the resort island other than the capital Male, you have to get advance approval. You can travel between islands via seaplane or boat. Keep in mind that these services are only till sunset after that they stop.

Basic Unwritten Rules of the Land

Make sure you do not plan the trip during the 1month period of Ramadan as most of the hotel staff will be out meeting families, and you will struggle to get food during the daytime as many shops and services, particularly during the time of prayer will not be open. During this month, you won’t get pork and alcohol. Most importantly, wear a dress that decently covers you. As the country is conservative, you have to wear a dress that covers knees, shoulders, abdomen, chest, and elbows while visiting the local islands.

The sea around the Maldives can have strong tidal currents, and several tourists drown every year. You should always take local advice before entering the sea.

While packing for a visit to the Maldives, do not pack pork, alcohol, or tobacco products (without health warning) along with any religious books. As the country offers a range of water sports, do not forget to carry a water-resistant or underwater camera with a polarizer to shoot all the action on land and underwater. It will be best if you carry snorkeling, surfing, or diving gear as they highly cut down your renting cost. Likewise, carry minimal tropical-friendly clothing, toiletries, swimsuits (for private islands), surf wax, sunscreen, personal care products, and medical emergency kit.

Local Laws and Customs

Maldives’ local laws reflect that it is an Islamic country, and violation of these laws might lead to a prison sentence. The country forbids public observance of any religion other than Islam. Respect local traditions, laws, religions, and customs at all times and make sure your actions don’t offend mostly during the month of Ramadan, or if you are planning to visit religious areas. the country is very conservative, so you should follow local dress standards when visiting non-resort islands. Homosexuality is also illegal in the country and might lead to a prison sentence.

The country offers up to 30days visa on arrival for British nationals, if you meet all the requirements like you hold a valid onward or return ticket and enough funds to cover your stay. Regarding the visa of your specific country, you can check Maldives’ official site, or you can contact us.

Always keep out for tax and hidden costs

One of the best tips you can get while traveling to the Maldives is to look out for the extra cost for the imported food and drinks at the luxury resorts along with their 10% service cost and 8% service tax (rapidly increasing). Don’t miss out on the taxes on equipment rentals, public price on menus, spa sessions, and more. An additional tip is not necessary, but you may offer it as a gesture of appreciation along with a 10% food tax.

Don’t Carry alcohol in the country

The Maldives is a Muslim dominated country, so the only place one can enjoy drinks without worries is at the private resorts. You must never carry alcohol while traveling to the Maldives, as you might risk being taken away or fined by the custom.

Travels are very pleasant; however, it can sometimes be challenging. It is important to look after your health while traveling, even more, if you are going to a whole new location with different altitudes, different temperatures, and all these things. You have to be up-to-date with all health-related issues in the country you are planning to visit. Visit a travel doctor before making your trip to the Maldives. Medical facilities in the Maldives are limited, with only a handful of fully equipped hospitals in the capital island Male and in Hulhumale. Although our resort island has medical facilities, it is best if you can enjoy your romantic trip without any issues. Also, don’t forget to take enough travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation.

Generally, island resorts are expensive, so carry enough cash with you. You will not find any cash machines on the island, and traveler’s cheques are also not widely used. You can exchange US dollars at the airport, banks or hotels.
